While they offer many different product lines, they’ve mostly been in the news lately for their implantable defibrillators. According to their website, they’re the world leader on external defibrillators for treating sudden cardiac arrest. The implantable defibrillators specifically treat tachyarrhythmia (too-fast beating) by emitting small shocks from smaller wires called leads to shock the heart back into beating normally. Lately, it is these leads that have been in the news since the Spring Fidelis version has been breaking and shocking people needlessly. They have been tied to five deaths so far.

Medtronic also offers a pacing system designed to treat patients that have an abnormally slow heartbeat as well as sporadic periods of a too-fast heart beat. This one device shocks both back to normal.

All of their heart pacing devices are linked wirelessly to a computer that monitors when and how many shocks are given to the heart to make it behave the way hearts are supposed to behave. Both sets of devices also involve leads (little tiny wires) connecting from basically a battery pack to the heart in order to shock the heart. The various types of heart devices also involve a small battery pack being implanted near the collar bone as well. The implantation process for all of these devices is the same.
