The History of Medtronic
Medtronic is a manufacturer of electronic medical products that help fight against potential dangers like sudden cardiac arrest and abnormal heart rhythms. They have built a reputation for themselves as one of the world’s leading medical device manufacturers.
The company was founded in 1949 by two brothers-in-law. One was an electrical engineering graduate student, working part-time to repair lab equipment in a nearby hospital, while the other worked for a local lumber firm.
Over time, the men set up shop in a garage, and sales began to grow. Eventually the two men abandoned their day jobs and started Medtronic, working now as full-time entrepreneurs. As their name became widespread throughout the state, new employees were hired and the scope of their project began to change. Not only did they repair medical equipment, but they also modified and customized them.
They soon built a relationship with an experienced doctor who was interested in developing a revolutionary pacemaker device. Medtronic soon began incorporating these devices into their line of products.
In 1960, the company needed space and moved into a 15,000 square foot warehouse. That same year, the company almost went into bankruptcy. After shaving some financial fat, the company reevaluated its vision and began the rebuilding process. By 1968, the company had generated more than $12 million in revenue.
Today, the company is a multi-national, multi-billion dollar company that offers medical solutions around the world. However, some of these products hurt more than they help.
