What to do when you have a Shock
Having a Medtronic can be a life-saving asset to the living experience. However it can be somewhat frightening if you’ve never experience a therapeutic shock or helped a loved one through it before. If you feel a rapid heart rhythm coming there are a few things that you can do to help ease the process.
If you follow these steps, you should be safe in the event that your heart is having a little trouble. Here they are:
- Stay calm and move to a place where you can sit or lie down.
The idea here is not to stress the heart anymore than it is already, in an attempt to slow the rapid beating.
- Get someone to stay with you during the event.
This is a precautionary measure. If things do not go well, you may not be able to place an emergency call for yourself. In this particular case, having someone there that you can trust would be life-saving.
- If nothing changes have the person call for an ambulance.
Be sure to know when to call the doctor. The appropriate time changes with respect to each patient, as each individual case requires a different kind of attention. The doctor may ask several different questions regarding the event. As a general rule of thumb, call within 24 hours of receiving a shock or if you experience extended periods of arrhythmia symptoms, including dizziness, sudden weakness, lightheadedness, fainting, and fluttering of the chest.
